Welcome to Weingarten Hotel for walkers

Walking along the South Tyrol wine route

The South Tyrol is known for being a walker’s paradise! Eppan on the South Tyrol wine route is your perfect base for hiking… St. Pauls, Eppan and the surrounding villages offer easy valley walks, between orchards and vineyards. Mendel and Penegal invite longer walks and extended mountain tours of the Ritten, Sarntal, Eggental, Ortler and Dolomite areas are possible with only a short drive!
See you soon…!

Weingarten Hotel hiking tips for Eppan and the surrounding area:
  • Castle walk : the walk takes you from Weingarten Hotel to the Kreideturm and further to Hocheppan Castle with its many impressive treasures. From here continue to the next little gem, the castle ruins of Boymont. Cross the Hocheppan Valley via a 60 m long secure wooden stairway. Let’s linger here a while, for in another 15 minutes you will reach Korb Castle.

  • The large and small Montiggl Lakes are nestled in an idyllic spot in the heart of the Montiggl Forest. You can either walk to the lakes from St. Pauls via Girlan or park directly in Montiggl and walk around the lakes from here!

  • Getting to Messner Mountain Museum MMM –Firmian Castle : from St. Pauls via the cycle path at Bozen to Firmian Castle at Frangart. After a visit to the Messner Mountain Museum you can walk to the wine-producing village of Girlan and then back again via St. Michael.

  • The ice holes are an experience and natural phenomenon combined. Maintaining an average temperature of 4°C all year round, you will see plants flourishing here that otherwise are only to be found in higher alpine regions.

  • A walk through the Spring Valley is a particularly wonderful experience in spring! The climatic conditions are such that flowers bloom earlier here than in the surrounding area—crocuses and narcissi await!

  • Mendel & Penegal: Mendel is part of the Trient province but remains a favourite daytrip destination of many South Tyrolese! The quickest route is via the Mendel railway from Kaltern. This is the steepest funicular railway in Europe! At the top you can walk to the Edelweiss Hut on the Roen and then via the Furgglauer ravine back to Eppan.

  • From Altenburg at Kaltern walk through the Rastenbachklamm gorge to Lake Kalter. You will pass St. Peter’s, probably the oldest church ruins in the whole Tyrol region.

  • Near Aldein and Radein, at the foot of the Weisshorn, lies the Bletterbach ravine. It is the only one of its kind in the whole of Europe and is also known as the “Grand Canyon of South Tyrol”.

Hiking in South Tyrol – a healthy option!
Walking looks after your heart, regulates cholesterol levels, lowers blood pressure, strengthens the lungs and bones, stimulates your whole metabolism and strengthens the immune system… and lets you enjoy impressive panoramic views of South Tyrol!
